The MEC for Education in the Western Cape, Debbie Schäfer, visited Calling Academy last week.
The appointment was prompted by an earlier visit by another WCED official who recommended a ministerial call, partly because of the innovative design of the school’s new building.
During her tour of the school the MEC spoke to the matric classes, encouraging them to prepare well for the forthcoming national exam. She also thanked the staff of the school for their hard work, expressing how pleased she was at what she had seen during her visit, noting the learners had “shining eyes” and she wished there were more such schools.
Willy Maliwa, WCED circuit manager, commented that the occasion was historic. This is because her resignation as MEC for Education, after eight years, became known on the same day, making it one of her final school visits.
