Scooters zipping around town has become a norm and the Stellenbosch Municipality is looking to add this transport form.
The GONOW electrical scooters have been a fixture in town since 2020. Complaints from the public about how drivers are whizzing around on the sidewalks have been raised. Executive mayor Adv. Gesie van Deventer said the scooters are a problem, but admitted when the municipality’s ordinances were drafted, scooters were not taken into account. “There is a bit of a gap [in the ordinances],” she said at a council meeting on Friday (23 August).
The mayor said advice is being sought from the provincial government, adding that local law enforcement must keep an eye out for any wrongdoers.
The area around Eikestad Mall is apparently a hotspot of trouble with scooter drivers on sidewalks endangering pedestrians. Van Deventer said solutions to address the problem are being sought, and invited suggestions from the community.
