A case of common assault is being investigated by the Stellenbosch Police, following the suspension of two private security officers for assaulting a member of the public in Andringa Street, Stellenbosch in the early morning hours of Sunday 6 March.
This is according to Stellenbosch Police spokesperson, Capt Nathalie Martin. “However, no arrest has been made,” she said.
The incident occurred outside Eikestad Mall, and was witnessed and filmed by MatieMedia journalist Bianke Neethling.
According to reports by MatieMedia, the officers involved in the assault also tried to intimidate Neethling into deleting the footage from her recording device.
Anton Lume, CEO of TSU Protection Services (TSU), that employed the two men, confirmed that the officers have been suspended until the outcome of their disciplinary inquiry, scheduled for 15 March.
“Departmentally, if found guilty on the charge, they will face termination. Criminal [prosecution] all depends on if the complainant registered an assault case against the member,” he said.
The disciplinary inquiry will be handled by an independent third party, after which TSU will make the outcome available.
From the video footage one can clearly see how the two TSU officers repeatedly kick the complainant after getting into a physical altercation with him.
Lume added that TSU has rendered a security service for 23 years and this was the first time that such an incident has been brought to their attention.
