Stellenbosch FC progressed to the semi-finals of the MTN 8 Wafa Wafa competition on Sunday evening (13 August), when they beat SuperSport United by 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
The local lads will now play against Orlando Pirates in the first leg, while Kaizer Chiefs are in action against Mamelodi Sundowns in the other one on the weekend of Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 September. The second leg will be played on the weekend of Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 September, with the final on Saturday 7 October.
On Sunday, the winning goal was scored in the 99th minute by New Zealand international André de Jong, after he received the ball from Fawaaz Basodien after a corner-kick.
At half-time the score was goalless and although both teams had chances to score in the first half, the strikers were denied putting their team in front by the respective goalkeepers.
Stellenbosch will now focus on their next DStv Premier Soccer League (PSL) match tomorrow (Friday 18 August), when they travel to Durban for their fixture against Royal AM at the Chatsworth Stadium. Their next home game is at the Danie Craven Stadium against SuperSport United on Saturday 26 August at 20:00, and after their progression to the MTN8 semis, a full house can be expected.
There’s no doubt SuperSport United would like to turn the tables, with the prospect of a win on the home turf of Stellenbosch certainly being bittersweet.
At the moment, the local team is placed in ninth place on the log with three points after two matches. They beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 at home, but lost to Polokwane by the same margin on Women’s Day (Wednesday 9 August). This was also the first time in three years Polokwane won a game in the PSL.
But the league is not won in August, as the league fixtures continue until May 2024, and the position on the log can chop and change as the competition continues.
