Stellenbosch Municipality has warned residents about an ongoing scam.
This week it warned locals about scammers who contact residents via WhatsApp messages claiming to be its “Head of Disconnection” who will disconnect their services because their municipal account is in arrears.
“We would like to remind residents of an ongoing scam targeting individuals, not only in our municipal area, but across the province. There is no such position as ‘Head of Disconnection’. It does not exist,” it said.
They said the scammers create panic not only by making residents think there are problems with their accounts, but also by telling residents they will be at the property within two hours. “These messages are not authorised by the municipality… Do not engage with these messages.”
