The under-13 sevens rugby team of Franschhoek High School not only won the inaugural Devon Williams 7s tournament in Pniël on Saturday 1 February, but is very proud of E-Jay Werner and Jaylon Boonzaaier after they received the tournament’s two top awards.

E-Jay won the award for player of the tournament, while Jaylon was named the best forward.

What made the occasion so memorable was the fact Franschhoek beat the favourites Simondium Primary by 12-5 in the final (“Sewestoernooi ’n groot sukses”, Eikestadnuus, 6 February).

“Right from the start I realised successful participation in this tournament would require stamina and determination,” said Jaylon. “Practically it meant making use of power and speed, while getting the most out of each opportunity when one had possession of the ball.

“In addition, I now understand the advice my coach, Keith Cyster, gave me, namely that one can only achieve what you think is best for you. With this mindset I learnt a lot from the tournament and would like to extend my appreciation to everyone involved in it.”

E-Jay was impressed with the valuable techniques and skills the team cemented at the tournament. “The biggest attribute I am taking away from the tournament is the boost in confidence regarding my place in the game. I was pleasantly surprised about what I could achieve, not of my own accord, but due to the inspiration of teammates and opponents alike.”

E-Jay acknowledged the contribution of coach Cyster, who taught him to show pride in what he and the rest of the team do on the field and to never give up.

“This lesson was displayed in each match and served us well throughout the tournament. We are extremely thankful to have had the opportunity to take part at the 7s tournament and are grateful to all who made it possible.”
