Six suspects were arrested after a high-speed chase on Monday evening, 5 September, in Stellenbosch.

The suspects, aged 28 to 40, were charged with attempted robbery and possession of imitation firearms following an attempted robbery at business premises, Sanele’s Shop, Enkanini, Kayamandi at 19:33.

Police spokesperson Captain Nathalie Martin said the complainant and his brother were in the shop when an unknown male entered. “The guy pretended to be looking for something to buy, but then left the shop and went outside,” she related. “A few minutes later more unknown males entered the shop. The complainant noticed one of them had a firearm, and the person grabbed the complainant’s brother at the waist and said in Xhosa, ‘Vula counter’. The complainant then switched the lights off making it dark in the shop. The suspects then ran out of the shop and the complainant’s brother ran after them.”

Martin said the brother saw the suspects get into a blue vehicle and drive away. “At the same time he saw a Law Enforcement vehicle that was driving in the area and stopped them. The Law Enforcement vehicle chased after the suspects and called for assistance from other security companies and police. Six suspects, aged 40, 33, 30, 39, 32 and 28, all from Khayelitsha, were arrested shortly afterwards.” The suspects are expected to appear in Stellenbosch Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday 8 September.
