Stellenbosch FC’s dream of reaching their first-ever Nedbank Cup final came to an end on Sunday evening, following a 0-0 (4-3) penalty shoot-out defeat to Sekhukhune United in the semi-finals.

Despite hitting the post twice through Junior Mendieta and Devin Titus during regulation time, Stellies failed to find the back of the net in 120 minutes of action at the Danie Craven Stadium.

Another effort from Sekhukhune United was blocked on the goal line, but the match ended goalless, forcing a penalty shoot out.

Ntokozo Mtshweni came on for Badra Ali Sangare in goal for the visitors, while Sage Stephens replaced Lee Langeveldt for the hosts. Both keepers made important saves, but it was Sekhukhune United who emerged victorious after Juan Ortiz’s penalty was saved.

Stellies coach Steve Barker and his side were left disappointed after coming agonisingly close to securing a spot in this year’s Nedbank Cup final, which will take place at Loftus Stadium.

Sekhukhune United will face Orlando Pirates later this month in what promises to be an exciting encounter.
