It was heartbreak for the Maties Varsity Netball team on Monday (23 September), as they missed out on a semi-final spot in this year’s Varsity Netball tournament. The Maroon Machine locked horns with NWU Netball at the Callie Human Hall of the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, losing 38-54 to end the competition in fifth place on 16 points, two points behind fourth-placed UP-Tuks. On Sunday (22 September), the team kept their semi-final hopes alive with a convincing 63-22 victory over Madibaz, but it was not enough to advance to the play-offs.
