The under-18 team of Stellenbosch Football Club was crowned national champions at the 2023 Engen Champ of Champs competition in Johannesburg. The local lads claimed the title after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 in the final on Monday afternoon (2 October). The “Young Maroons” qualified for the prestigious youth tournament after claiming victory in the regional Engen Knockout Challenge earlier this year, and went on all the way to lift the trophy at their first appearance at the national competition. Stellies’ Jean-Pierre Farrugia was named coach of the tournament after guiding his team to victory, Connor de Vries claimed the goalkeeper of the tournament award and Langelihle Phili took home the accolades for striker of the tournament and player of the tournament.
