No-one has been arrested in connection with the fatal crash in Khayamandi on Friday 29 August.

The accident claimed the life of a pedestrian, while another was seriously injured.

According to reports a minibus taxi ploughed into the two pedestrians and a stationary vehicle parked on the pavement in George Blake Road, close to the Khayamandi Mall, around 12:20.

Community members say the car belongs to a local stallholder who sells fresh produce along the road – a popular informal trading area.

Authorities closed all access to the road, but the closure did not stop the curious from capturing the horrific scene on their cellphones. Videos of the tragic scene was shared across social media platforms.

The deceased has since been identified as Lindiswa Ngamlana, a senior general worker for the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Stellenbosch roads depot. Ngamlana was apparently on her way home when she was struck by a passing taxi.

Eikestadnuus could not confirm the identity or the current medical condition of the injured pedestrian at the time of publishing.

Captain Nathalie Martin, spokesperson for Stellenbosch police, confirmed a case of culpable homicide is under investigation. “No arrests have been made and the matter is still under investigation,” she said.
