Stellenbosch police are warning locals to take proactive measures to safeguard their vehicles after a spike in cases of vehicle theft. Local police say whether residents have a car, truck or motorcycle, it is important to help prevent theft.
- Invest in anti-theft devices: Consider installing anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks, car alarms, immobilisers and GPS tracking devices to act as deterrents and make it more difficult for thieves to steal your vehicle.
- Park in well-lit areas: When parking your vehicle, choose well-lit and populated areas whenever possible. Avoid secluded or dimly-lit areas, as they provide cover for thieves to operate unnoticed. If parking in a garage or driveway, ensure that exterior lighting is sufficient to deter potential thieves.
- Lock your vehicle: Always lock your vehicle, even if you are only stepping away for a short period. Make it a habit to check that all doors and windows are securely locked before leaving your vehicle unattended.
- Avoid leaving valuables in plain sight: Thieves are often attracted to vehicles containing valuable items such as electronics, bags or personal belongings. Keep valuables out of sight by storing them in the boot or glove compartment or, better yet, taking them with you when leaving the vehicle.
- Use caution with spare keys: Avoid leaving spare keys inside or near your vehicle, as this can make it easier for thieves to steal. Instead, keep keys in a secure location at home or with a trusted individual.
- Be mindful of keyless entry systems: Vehicles equipped with keyless entry systems may be vulnerable to relay attacks, where thieves use electronic devices to intercept and amplify signals from key fobs. To minimise the risk of theft, consider storing key fobs in signal-blocking pouches or containers when not in use.
- Employ visual deterrents: Display signs or stickers indicating that your vehicle is equipped with anti-theft devices can serve as a visual deterrent to potential thieves. Additionally engraving your vehicle identification number (VIN) on major components can make it easier to track and identify stolen vehicles.
- Stay vigilant and report suspicious activity: Be alert to your surroundings and report any suspicious activity or individual loitering near vehicles to local police or law enforcement. Community vigilance can help deter theft and enhance overall safety in your area.
- Secure motorcycles and bicycles: If you own a motorcycle or bicycle, invest in quality locks and secure them to fixed objects such as bike racks or sturdy poles. Consider using additional security measures such as wheel locks or chains to further deter theft.
- Stay informed and educated: Stay informed about recent trends and techniques used by thieves to steal vehicles.
