The Stellenbosch community will bid farewell to Sister Letitia du Toit, also known as the Florence Nightingale of Stellenbosch, who died on Sunday (7 April).

The 79-year-old’s nursing career started at age 17, when she started her practical learning at Karl Bremer Hospital in Bellville and Conradie Hospital in Pinelands. Afterwards, Du Toit worked at Stellenbosch Hospital until age 63 and retired at the Cloetesville Day Clinic.

“My mom was always known in the community as someone who lent a hand to everyone in need, even after retiring. It goes without saying that nursing was her passion,” her daughter, Lizelle Hartley, said.

“We as a family and the broader community will miss her care, small talks, love and presence. She joins our dad Bill, her sister Roseline von Schonen and grandson Kearan in heaven. Along with the rest of the community, we will say our final goodbyes to a strong, loving and caring woman, who always believed in helping others in need.”

Du Toit leaves behind five children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

  • Her funeral service will be held at St Mary’s Anglican church in Victoria Street, Stellenbosch at 08:30 tomorrow (Friday 12 April).
