Karate-Zen International held its annual awards ceremony at the Parow Civic Centre on Saturday 26 October.

All Karate-Zen karatekas from the Cape were honoured for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.

At the event various awards in different categories were handed to young and old students.

Among the students and parents were Stellenbosch karatekas and the attendance exceeded all expectations, with a packed hall of very excited and exuberant guests.

Through their programme “Shaping leaders of tomorrow”, Marlon Davidse Sensei and Garfield Bergstedt want to encourage all Stellenbosch residents to join them and bring youths as well.

“Our teachers are fully qualified and have accumulated close to a 100 years of expertise and practice. It is a deliberate decision of leadership to offer our expert knowledge (and wisdom), free of charge, and for the betterment of our beloved Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Khayamandi and the greater Stellenbosch,” Bergstedt explained.

The local dojo’s kun (creed) is “I will be humble, courteous, patient and honourable. I will strive for knowledge, strength, serenity and peace. I will respect myself, all others, what is mine and what belongs to others. This is our way or path or do (Japanese), the bu (warrior) and do (way), budo.”
