Stellenbosch police are warning residents to take steps to reduce risk and protect themselves and homes against robberies.
They share the following tips:
• Lock all doors and windows before leaving or going to bed. Reinforce doors and windows with stronger locks or bars; install security cameras and an alarm system to deter intruders.
• Use motion-sensor lights around entry points.
•Be cautious around strangers and do not open the door for unknown visitors. Verify the identity of service providers before allowing them inside.
• Be cautious about sharing your daily routines with strangers; avoid making your home a target by keeping valuables out of sight from windows.
• Have an emergency plan by teaching family members what to do in case of a break-in. Be sure to save emergency contacts on your phone and consider a panic button. Getting to know your neighbours can help prevent crime.
• Join a neighbourhood watch; and report suspicious activities.
