The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) was honoured with two prestigious awards at the National Good Governance Awards, hosted during the annual Local Government Indaba at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg, recently.

The awards recognise CWDM’s remarkable achievement of 11 consecutive clean audit outcomes as well as the municipality’s sustained record of maintaining sound, funded budgets over the past decade.

In a national context, where many municipalities face significant governance and financial challenges, this recognition places CWDM among the country’s leading examples of transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership.

Dr Elna von Schlicht, executive mayor of CDWD, welcomed the announcement by Fiki Hlabisa, national minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

“The CWDM is proud to have received recognition for the financial management, 11 consecutive ‘clean audits’ and maintaining sound funded budgets,” she said.

“I extend my deep appreciation to our Budget and Treasury Office, and all officials who go the extra mile.”

The indaba, convened under the theme of revitalising municipalities and restoring public trust in local government and highlighted the urgent need for stability and reform in the sector. CWDM’s consistent performance underscores its commitment to clean governance and positions the municipality as a trusted custodian of public resources in service of its communities.
