Merecia Smith, owner of Wine Analytical Services (WASLab) at Spier Wine Farm, won the award for excellence in entrepreneurship in Category 3 at the recent Good Hope FM Warrior Women Awards. The award celebrates a woman who has shown outstanding entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and business acumen, making a significant impact in this industry. Smith started her journey as a general worker at the historic farm in 1998, working her way through the ranks as laboratory assistant, supervisor and eventually lab manager in 2018. In 2019, she became the first person of colour to start a wine lab in South Africa. WASLab is currently ranked third best in the country, as per last year’s South African Wine Laboratories Association competition.
