Somerset West: Meraki Press will host a workshop on “How to write a children’s book” at the Hottentots Holland Dutch Reformed church, on the corner of Gordon and Cloetenburg Road, from 10:00 until 13:00. The workshop will cover: how to write for different ages, writing stories with purpose, and planning, layout and publishing. Cloetesville: Die Cloetesville-biblioteek en Right to Care bied vanaf 10:00 tot 11:00 ’n praatjie oor kinderveiligheid in die Eike-saal aan. Die praatjie, wat in die aanloop tot Kinderbeskermingsweek (Woensdag 29 Mei tot Woensdag 5 Junie) aangebied word, word deur die Khula-ontwikkelingsgroep gefasiliteer.

WEDNESDAY 15 MAY

Stellenbosch: Horizon House will host a fundraising Women’s Morning with a harvest table at Weltevreden Estate at 10:00, in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Shéri Brynard, an internationally recognised speaker and the only person with down syndrome holding a teaching qualification, will be the guest speaker. Her remarkable journey and insights into overcoming challenges will inspire. The cost of R300 includes refreshments and a special gift bag. Funds raised through the event will go towards making a meaningful impact on the lives of 16 of Horizon House’s residents who have no financial support.

Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch Alcohol Anonymous, as well as Al-Anon group, meets in the rooms of the Stellenbosch Baptist church, at 6 Merriman Avenue, every Thursday at 19:30.

FRIDAY 17 MAY

Franschhoek: The 2024 Franschhoek Literary Festival boasts highlights from the local and international book scene, including renowned local, pan-African and international authors. From Friday 17 to Sunday 19 May festivalgoers will engage in a programme featuring panel discussions, in-depth author interviews, interactive writing workshops and poetry readings; and Melodies in Words, an evening of art song and poetry inspired by literature. Among the local authors and works featured are Andrew Brown (The Bitterness of Olives), Anoeschka von Meck (Twa die Tydloper), Justice Malala (The Plot to Save South Africa), Karen Jennings, author of Crooked Seeds (long-listed for the 2021 Booker Prize), Shubnum Khan (The Lost Love of Akbar Manzil), and Zibu Sithole (The Thing with Zola). It will also host several esteemed international authors virtually, including Patrick Radden Keefe, Andrey Kurkov and Tim Marshall. WOENSDAG 22 MEI

Stellenbosch: Die Stellenbosse Heemkring vergader om 19:00 in die konferensiekamer van die NG kerk Stellenbosch-Wes. Die gasspreker, Marianna Kritzinger, die agterkleinkind van een van die Morkel-stamvaders, praat oor “Die Morkel-huis (historiese huis in Ryneveldstraat, tussen Dorpstraat en Kerkstraat) en die Morkels van Stellenbosch”. Kritzinger sal die Morkel-huis se geskiedenis van 1693 tot 1966 skets – die gebou het eers as wynkelder begin, ook as kerk gedien en as woonhuis geëindig. Sy brei ook uit oor die stamvader van die Morkels in Suid-Afrika se verbintenis met die huis en sy nageslag, wat in Stellenbosch gewoon en gewerk het. Belangstellendes is welkom. FRIDAY 24 MAY

Khayamandi: Award-winning musician Melorie Jane will perform at Amazink at 19:00. The performance forms part of a series of concerts to launch her new album, Hold the Stars, a fusion of distinct South African jazz influences, evoking a sense of home, while also traversing the realms of film music and contemporary jazz. Artists featured on Hold the Stars include Melorie Jane on piano and vocals, Ntsikelelo Jack Mcwabe (trumpet), saxophonist Lehlohonolo Ntsoko, Gilbert Sithole (bass) and Thato Tswai (drums).
