Plans are underway for the future of the Transvalia building in Dorp Street, Stellenbosch.
According to Stellenbosch Municipality its has received numerous inquiries about the historic building’s future.
“We are currently finalising the detailed specifications and requirements for the development and preservation of this beautiful heritage building, and the tender will be advertised soon,” Stuart Grobbelaar, municipal spokesperson, confirmed.
The double-storey five-bay building with straight moulded parapet is owned by the municipality.
Council has resolved that the redevelopment proposal for the heritage building must focus on tourism. No office space will be permitted in the new development.
Part of the building is currently used as office space for the municipality’s Housing and Infrastructure departments. Additionally, a unit is being leased to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), subject to the finalisation of the tender.
The municipality’s Housing and Infrastructure officials will be relocated before the site is handed over to the successful bidder. The redevelopment proposal will return to council for final approval of the long-term lease after the tender is awarded.
“The entire development must respect the heritage of the area and the building,” the municipality said. “We appreciate the interest and patience of residents and interest groups in this project.”
