Over the past few years, Somerset College Trek has become synonymous with its social responsibility outreach to the Greyton, Genadendal and Berewil areas.

In 2018, the school decided to join forces with Cape Nature to improve the facilities at the Nuweberg Forest station, which is to the benefit not only of the college trekkers but all other hikers using this as a base.

The facilities originally consisted of four showers and three toilets in a small wendy house, but the wish list identified by the manager at Nuweberg, Monique Ruthenberg, included a fire pit, small kitchen and lights inside and outside the building.

With the help of Somerset College facilities staff, under the guidance of Bradley Clack, those involved in Trek were able to assist Nuweberg with all its needs.

The group designed and built a beautiful fire pit with a new spotlight to provide the light needed for the groups around the fire. They also converted one of the rooms into a kitchen area with a sink and plug points for kettles.

Everyone involved in the project is grateful to Clack and everyone else involved from Somerset College. This is one small way in which an ongoing contribution to the experience of, not only trekkers, but all visitors to the Nuweberg Forest station, can be made.
