The candidate nomination process for all wards started on Monday 22 July as candidates gear-up for the by-election taking place on Wednesday 28 August.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of the Western Cape will conduct three by-elections this month.
Voters in Stellenbosch’s Ward 17 can still register online.
Candidates have until 17:00 on Monday 5 August to submit their nominations. Independent candidates and parties are reminded to comply with the regulations of the Municipal Electoral Act as it relates to candidate nomination.
The IEC highlights the following regulations:. a ward candidate must be a registered voter in the municipality where the by-election is held;. a ward candidate can be nominated by a registered political party; or. if standing as an independent, the candidate must also satisfy the minimum requirement of 50 signatures of registered voters of the ward concerned who support his or her nomination.
Parties and independent candidates must submit all required documents and pay the election deposit to contest before 17:00 on Monday 5 August.
Manual submissions of local candidate nominations for Ward 17 can only be done at the 135 Dorp Street, Stellenbosch.
Parties or independent candidates who have registered with the IEC’s Online Candidate Nomination System (OCNS) can capture and manage nominations, documentation and make payments online.
Parties and independent candidates who seek information or assistance is urged not to wait for the last minute, but rather visit the local office before the deadline, or contact the local IEC office during office hours on weekdays on 021 882 9045.
