The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) on Tuesday 4 April said it was experiencing a blood shortage in the O- blood group, as there were only three days’ blood supply left. Other blood groups experiencing a shortage were A+, B+ and B- blood groups. WCBS is appealing to all eligible donors and the public to donate blood today.

Typically, blood-stock levels in the Western Cape declined over the Easter period, as blood donors take a well-deserved break over the public and school holidays. This year Ramadan also commenced in March, which added pressure as Muslim donors cannot donate blood during their fast.

Blood donation takes only 30 minutes, and up to three lives can be saved. WCBS encouraged all blood donors to find their closest blood-donation clinic in support of the many patients who need blood during this critical period.

“No matter who you are or where you are from, we urge you to donate blood,” said Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. If between age 16 and 75, weigh 50 kg or more, are in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle you should be able to donate.

For more info or to find your closest blood donation clinic, please download the WCBS app on Android and iOS, send us a WhatsApp on 060 549 7244 or visit www.wcbs.org.za. Do something remarkable, donate blood.
