The 2022 version of the annual Cape Wine Auction (CWA), held in partnership with Mastercard, raised well over R12 million on Saturday 12 February, bringing the accumulated total raised to more than R117 million since the first auction held in 2014.
The event was held at Quoin Rock Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, with guests bidding generously for a collection of once-in-a-lifetime lots.
The CWA is regarded as one of the most significant international wine charity auctions conceived in South Africa, uniting the industry around a single goal of raising money for education. The auction has created a benchmark in philanthropy, with 100% of the proceeds managed by the CWA Trust and distributed among carefully selected beneficiaries.
Said CWA director Darielle Robertson: “We are delighted with this year’s results, especially given the tough economic times we are going through. The monies raised mean the CWA Trust can continue its invaluable work with our beneficiaries, all of which are dedicated to improving the education and lives of children in the Cape Winelands. A big thank you to all our partners, especially Mastercard, and to those who bid generously for the amazing lots that were so kindly donated by many.”
The day’s highest bid of R1,2 million was for Lot 17, which included a three-night getaway for eight people in the Bazaruto Archipelago at &Beyond Benguerra Island, as well as a return private charter flights from Cape Town or Johannesburg and return scenic helicopter transfers from the lodge and Vilanculos, sponsored by Spier Wine Farm.
Other fiercely contested lots were “The Best of British”, Lot 18 (golf, horse racing and tickets to an English Premier League football game), Lot 7, “Celebrating Goodness”, with wine, dining and travel experiences in South Africa and France, Lot 11, “Celebrating SA Excellence”, and Lot 14, a week’s stay in Tuscany. The Gift of the Givers Lots – donations to charitable causes without prizes in return – also raised a total of R525 000.
