A woman was scammed out of an Apple MacBook after advertising it on Gumtree.
According to Stellenbosch Police spokesperson, Nathalie Martin, the complainant received a notification from a man who wanted to buy the laptop after she advertised it on 10 October.
“She asked him to transfer R4 500 in order to get the MacBook. Later she received an SMS that an electronic funds transfer of R4 500 was made and that the money would likely reflect in 24 to 72 hours.”
The man then sent a delivery man around 15:00 on 12 October to her residence in Dennesig Street to pick up the laptop and then left.
“The complainant then received a WhatsApp stating the buyer received the laptop and also mistakenly transferred an amount of R1 850. She then went to her bank and was told it was a scam. No arrests have been made yet,” says Martin.
