Sixteen disadvantaged learners at Ikaya Primary were delighted when they received brand new school uniforms on Friday 11 March.
As part of their community outreach programme, the Young Men’s Guild (YMG) of the Methodist Church in the Cape of Good Hope district, decided to give back to the community and the youth, starting at Ikaya Primary.
“Our purpose is to be active in the education of children,” said Nathi Geja, president of the YMG. “We want to encourage and be part of the development of the child. At our convention here in Stellenbosch we decided to reach out to a local school. It doesn’t stop there, though, as we plan on including these children in other planned programmes.”
Happy faces all round were evidence of the children’s and teachers’ gratitude. “It is really amazing to see how this gesture lit up the children’s faces, and I would like to thank the church for caring and giving back to the needy,” said a smiling Zukiswa Mdleleni, deputy principal. “These learners have never owned a uniform, as most of their parents can’t afford it.
“Today they can walk the halls proudly, knowing that these uniforms and shoes belong to them.”
